Request for Recall of Uloric
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Uloric in 2009, which was the first time in 40 years that such a drug was approved. Upon approval, the FDA required Takeda to conduct post-market clinical safety trials. The trials included 6,000 patients and revealed that those taking Uloric suffered higher rates of cardiovascular-related death. As a result, the FDA issued a box warning for the medication in November 2017.
The consumer advocacy group Public Citizen requested in June 2018 that the FDA take this a step further and recall the medication. The group asserts that the harmful side effects outweigh the benefits of the medication.
Lawsuit Filed Against Takeda Pharmaceuticals
Also in 2018, a former safety consultant with Takeda filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the company. The suit was filed on behalf of the FDA and claimed that Takeda did not inform the agency that serious side effects such as kidney problems, liver damage, bone marrow failure, and drug interaction could result from taking Uloric.
